What & Why

What is Puberty?Puberty is the time in your life when your body changes from a child's body to an adult's body. These changes are caused by special chemical messengers in your body called hormones. Think of hormones like instruction manuals telling your body it's time to grow and mature. Why Does It Happen? This process prepares your body for the future, including the ability to have children one day. It's a natural and healthy part of life's journey. Remember, everyone goes through puberty, but the timing is different for each person, and that's completely normal!

Example 1 — Physical Changes

During puberty, you'll notice many physical changes. Some happen to everyone, while others are specific to bodies that develop sperm or eggs.Changes for Everyone: You'll likely have a growth spurt (getting taller quickly), grow hair in new places (like under your arms and in the pubic area), and your skin might get oilier, which can cause pimples or acne. For Bodies Developing Sperm: The voice gets deeper, shoulders get wider, and muscles develop. The testes and penis grow larger. For Bodies Developing Ovaries/Uterus: Hips get wider and the body becomes more curved. Breasts develop. Menstruation (getting a period) begins. These are all signs that your body is healthy and developing as it should.

Example 2 — Emotional & Social Changes

Puberty isn't just about physical changes. Your brain is changing, too! This can affect your feelings and how you interact with others.New & Stronger Feelings: You might feel happy one minute and sad or irritable the next. These mood swings are caused by changing hormones and are very common.Increased Self-Awareness: You might think more about how you look or what others think of you. You might also feel more self-conscious.Desire for Independence: It's normal to want more privacy and to make more of your own decisions.Shifting Friendships: Your friendships might feel more important, and you may develop crushes or romantic feelings for the first time.
