To do all this work, your body needs the right fuel from the food you eat.Think of food in terms of building blocks:Carbohydrates (Carbs): Your body's main energy source. Choose complex carbs like whole grains (oatmeal, brown rice, whole-wheat bread) for long-lasting energy.Protein: The builder. It helps create muscle, bone, skin, and hair. Find it in foods like chicken, fish, beans, tofu, eggs, and nuts.Fats: Important for brain health and absorbing certain vitamins. Example 1 — The Energy-Boosting Breakfast

Scenario: Alex often feels sleepy during his first two classes and has trouble focusing. He usually skips breakfast or just grabs a sugary cereal bar.The Fix: Let's build a breakfast that provides steady energy.Start with Protein: This helps you feel full and focused. Alex could have scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt, or a handful of almonds.Add a Complex Carb: This is for long-lasting fuel. A slice of whole-wheat toast or a bowl of oatmeal is a great choice.Include a Fruit or Veggie: This adds vitamins and fiber. Alex could add berries to his yogurt or have a banana with his toast.Result: A breakfast like Greek yogurt with berries and a sprinkle of nuts gives Alex protein, healthy fats, complex carbs, and vitamins. He'll have more energy to start his day and be able to focus better in class.

Example 2 — The Smart After-School Snack

Scenario: Maya is starving when she gets home from school. Her go-to snack is a bag of chips and a soda, but she feels sluggish and tired an hour later when it's time for homework. The Fix: Swap the sugary, low-nutrient snack for one that refuels and sustains.Poor Choice: Chips and soda. This gives a quick burst of energy from sugar and refined carbs, followed by a "crash," leaving Maya feeling tired.Smart Choice: An apple with peanut butter, a small bowl of whole-grain cereal with milk, or baby carrots with hummus.Result: These smart snacks provide a mix of fiber, protein, and complex carbs. They satisfy hunger and give Maya the steady energy she needs to tackle her homework or head to soccer practice.
