What & Why

When you use your muscles in a new way or work them a little harder than usual, they get tiny, safe micro-tears. Don't worry, this is a good thing! When your body repairs these tears, your muscles grow back even stronger. This feeling is called muscle soreness. It usually feels like a dull ache or tightness, and you might not feel it until the next day. It's different from a sharp, sudden pain, which is your body's signal to stop right away!

Example 1 — Soccer Star Sam

Sam played in a really long soccer tournament on Saturday. He ran, kicked, and jumped more than he usually does. The Activity: An extra-long soccer game. The Next Day: On Sunday morning, Sam's thigh and calf muscles feel tired and achy. It's a little hard to walk down the stairs. What it Means: This is normal muscle soreness! His leg muscles got a great workout and are now in the process of rebuilding to be even stronger for the next game. A gentle walk or some light stretching will help him feel better.

Example 2 — Dance Diva Maya

Maya went to her first-ever hip-hop dance class. The class had lots of new moves, jumps, and poses she had never tried before. The Activity: A new style of dance class. The Next Day: Maya wakes up and her arms, legs, and even her tummy muscles feel a little tender to the touch. What it Means: Her body is just getting used to the new movements. This soreness is a sign that she challenged her muscles in a new way, and they are adapting and getting stronger.
