What & Why
Feeling Achy vs. Feeling Ouch! When you play hard or try a new sport, your muscles work a lot! Afterwards, you might feel one of two things:Soreness: This is a dull, achy, or tired feeling in your muscles. It usually shows up a day or two after you play. It's a sign that your muscles got a good workout and are getting stronger! We can call this "good tired."Pain: This is a sharp, sudden, or stinging feeling. You might feel it right when you get hurt, like twisting an ankle. Pain is your body's alarm bell saying, "Stop! Something is wrong!"Resting is super important because it gives your muscles time to heal and rebuild, which is how you get stronger and faster for next time.

Example 1 — Good Soreness
Meet AishaAisha played in a big soccer tournament all Saturday. On Sunday morning, her leg muscles feel heavy and achy. It doesn't hurt to walk, but she feels it when she goes up the stairs. What is she feeling? This is normal muscle soreness. Her leg muscles did a lot of running and kicking! What should she do? This is a great day for "active recovery." She can go for a gentle walk with her family, do some light stretching, and drink plenty of water. The result: By Monday, her legs feel much better and are ready for recess. Her muscles are now a little bit stronger than before the tournament!

Example 2 — Bad Pain
Meet LeoLeo is playing basketball at the park. He jumps for the ball and lands awkwardly on his foot. He feels a sharp pain in his ankle right away. What is he feeling? This is pain from a possible injury. It's his body's alarm bell. What should he do? He should STOP playing immediately. Trying to "play through it" could make it much worse. He needs to tell a grown-up (like his dad who is at the park) what happened. The result: His dad helps him sit down and they put some ice on his ankle to help with swelling. They rest it and watch his friends play instead. He avoided making the injury worse by listening to the pain signal.
