What & Why
When you play, run, and move, your body sends you messages. It's important to know how to read them! There are two main kinds of messages: soreness and pain.Soreness is like a high-five for your muscles. It's a dull, achy, or tired feeling you get a day or two after you've worked your muscles hard. It means your muscles are getting stronger! It's a 'good' feeling that goes away.Pain is like a warning alarm from your body. It's often a sharp, stabbing, or sudden feeling. It's your body saying, 'Hey, stop! Something is wrong.' Pain is a 'bad' feeling that tells you to stop what you're doing and tell an adult.Knowing the difference helps you stay safe and healthy while having fun!

Example 1 — Soccer Star Soreness
The Scene: Maya played in a long soccer tournament on Saturday. On Sunday morning, she wakes up and her thigh muscles feel tired and achy. It's not a sharp feeling, just a dull ache when she walks up the stairs. The Clues:The feeling is dull and achy, not sharp. It happened the day after a lot of exercise. She can still move, it just feels a little tired. The Verdict: This is soreness! Her muscles got a great workout and are busy rebuilding to be even stronger. A little gentle stretching and an easy day of play is a good plan.

Example 2 — Playground Pain
The Scene: Leo is swinging on the monkey bars. His hand slips and he lands awkwardly on the ground. He feels a sudden, sharp jab in his wrist. The Clues:The feeling was sudden and sharp. It happened because of a specific event (the fall). It hurts a lot to try and move his wrist. The Verdict: This is pain! It's a warning alarm. Leo should immediately stop playing, not try to use his wrist, and tell the closest teacher or adult right away so they can help.
