The 'Es la una' Rule Es la una... Use 'Es la' only for the 1 o'clock hour. We use 'la una' because we are talking about 'la hora' (the hour), which is singular and feminine. The 'Son las' Rule Son las [hour]... Use 'Son las' for all other hours (2-12). We use 'Son las' because hours 2 through 12 are plural. Adding Minutes Formula Son las [hour] y [minutes]. To add minutes from 1 to 30, say the hour first, then the word 'y' (which means 'and'), then the number of minutes.
