The 'y cuarto' Formula
Son las + [hour from 2-12] + y cuarto.
Use this formula when the time is 15 minutes past any hour from two to twelve. It's like saying 'It's [the hour] and a quarter'.
The 'y media' Formula
Son las + [hour from 2-12] + y media.
Use this formula when the time is 30 minutes past any hour from two to twelve. It's like saying 'It's [the hour] and a half'.
The Special 'Una' Rule
Es la una + y cuarto / y media.
The 1 o'clock hour is special! Because 'una' is singular, we use 'Es la' instead of 'Son las'. This is the only hour where you use 'Es la'.
