Grammar Rules & Patterns

The Singular vs. Plural Hour Rule Use 'Es la una' for 1:00. Use 'Son las...' for all other hours. Time in Spanish must agree in number. Since 'una' (one) is a single hour, we use the singular verb 'es'. All other hours (dos, tres, etc.) are plural, so we use the plural verb 'son'. The 'Y' Formula (Minutes PAST the hour) Son las [hour] y [minutes]. For times between 1 and 30 minutes past the hour, you state the hour and add 'y' (and) followed by the minutes. We will focus on 'y cuarto' (15) and 'y media' (30). The 'Menos' Formula (Minutes BEFORE the hour) Son las [NEXT hour] menos [minutes].
