Grammar Rules & Patterns

The 'Es la una' Rule For 1:00, always use: Es la una en punto. Because 'one' is a single hour, we use the singular form 'Es la...'. This is a special rule that only applies to the one o'clock hour. The 'Son las...' Rule For 2:00 through 12:00, always use: Son las + [number] + en punto. Because hours 2 through 12 are plural (more than one), we use the plural form 'Son las...'. You just add the number for the hour after 'Son las'. The Question Rule To ask the time, always say: ¿Qué hora es? This is the standard, polite way to ask someone for the current time. Memorize this important question.
