What & Why

Refusal skills are the tools you use to say 'no' effectively when you're faced with pressure to do something you don't want to do, something that's unhealthy, or something that's against the rules. Why do they matter? Because they help you handle peer pressure, stay safe, and be true to yourself. It's about having the confidence to make your own healthy choices, whether that's about avoiding vaping, staying safe online, or just not going along with a bad idea.

Example 1 — The Vape Offer

Your friend pulls out a vape at the park and says, 'Want to try? Everyone does it.' You feel pressured and don't want to.Here's how you could handle it:Step 1: Say 'No' clearly. Look your friend in the eye and say, 'No, thanks.' or 'I'm not into that.'Step 2: Give a reason (optional but helpful). 'I don't want to vape, it's bad for your lungs.'Step 3: Suggest an alternative. 'Hey, let's go play basketball instead.' This changes the subject and gives you something else to do.Step 4: Walk away if needed. If they keep pressuring you, just say, 'I've gotta go,' and leave the situation. Your safety comes first.

Example 2 — The Sketchy DM

You're chatting with someone you met in an online game. They ask for a picture of you and want to know which school you go to. This feels weird and unsafe. Here's what to do:Step 1: Do NOT share the information. Your personal info is private.Step 2: Say 'No' and end the conversation. You can say, 'I'm not comfortable sharing that.' or simply, 'I have to go now.' You don't owe them an explanation.Step 3: Block the person. If they make you feel uncomfortable, you have the power to block them so they can't contact you again.Step 4: Tell a trusted adult. Always tell a parent, guardian, or teacher about any online interaction that makes you feel unsafe.
