What & Why

A positive support system, or your 'crew', is a group of people you can trust and rely on when you need help, advice, or just someone to listen. This includes friends, family members, teachers, coaches, or any trusted adult. Why does it matter? Your crew helps you feel confident, navigate tricky situations, and resist peer pressure. They're the people who have your back and want you to be your best, happiest, and safest self. Making smart choices is easier when you're not alone.

Example 1 — Maya's Vaping Dilemma

Maya is at the park with some new acquaintances when one of them offers her a vape. She feels awkward and pressured.Step 1: Gut Check. Maya's stomach feels tight. She knows this isn't a good situation for her.Step 2: Think of Your Crew. She thinks of her best friend, Jamal, and knows he wouldn't be into this. This reminds her of her own values.Step 3: Use an Exit Strategy. She discreetly texts Jamal: "Call me in 1 min, need an out."Step 4: Leave Confidently. When her phone rings, she says, "Oh, sorry, it's my mom, I totally forgot I have to go. See you later!" and walks away without making a big deal.Step 5: Connect with Support. Later, she tells Jamal what happened. He supports her decision, and she feels proud for making a smart choice.

Example 2 — Leo and the Online Rumor

Leo is in a group chat when someone posts an embarrassing and mean-spirited meme about another student. Some people are laughing, but Leo feels it's wrong.Step 1: Pause and Think. Instead of reacting, Leo thinks about how the student in the meme must feel.Step 2: Reach Out. He's not sure what to do, so he shows the chat to his older sister, who is part of his support system.Step 3: Get Good Advice. His sister advises him not to engage with the post, to leave the group chat, and to report the situation to a school counselor. She explains that staying silent is like approving of the bullying.Step 4: Take Action. Leo leaves the chat and sends an anonymous email to the school counselor. He feels much better for doing the right thing instead of just going along with the crowd.
