What & Why

A Nutrition Facts label is like a secret code on your food's packaging. It tells you exactly what's inside! Learning to read it helps you make smart choices to get the energy you need for playing, learning, and growing strong. We'll focus on a few key clues:Serving Size: This tells you how much of the food is in one serving. All the other numbers on the label are for this amount!Calories: This is a measure of energy. We need calories for energy, but it's good to get them from healthy sources.Sugar: Some sugar is natural (like in fruit), but lots of snacks have 'added sugars'. It's smart to choose foods with less added sugar.Protein & Fiber: These are superstars! Protein helps build muscles, and fiber helps you feel full and keeps your tummy happy.

Example 1 — Cereal Box

You're picking a cereal for breakfast. Let's look at the label for 'Oaty O's'.Find the Serving Size: The label says '1 cup'. This means all the numbers below are for just one cup of cereal.Check the Calories: It says '120 calories' per serving. That's the energy you get from one cup.Look at the Sugar: It lists '10g of Sugar'. This is an important clue. Some cereals have much more!Detective Question: What if you pour a really big bowl and eat 2 cups? You have to double everything! That means you ate 240 calories and 20g of sugar. Paying attention to serving size is key!

Let's compare two options.Yogurt A (Plain Greek Yogurt):Serving Size: 1 containerSugar: 6gProtein: 15gYogurt B (Fruity Swirl Yogurt):Serving Size: 1 containerSugar: 18gProtein: 5gDetective Work: Both are one serving, which makes it easy to compare. Yogurt A has way less sugar and a lot more protein. The protein will help you feel full and strong until dinner. Yogurt A is the smarter choice to fuel your body!
