Grammar Rules & Patterns

The 'Es la una' Rule Use `Es la una` for 1:00. Use `Son las [número]` for all other hours (2:00-12:00). The verb changes because 'una' refers to one single hour (singular), so we use 'es'. All other numbers refer to multiple hours (plural), so we use 'son'. The Half-Hour Rule To say it is half-past the hour, add `y media` after the hour. Formula: `Son las [hora] y media`. Use this pattern when the minute hand is on the 6. 'Media' means 'half', so you are saying it is 'half past' the hour.
