What & Why

In many sports, you need to do two things at once. In basketball, you often have to dribble (bounce the ball) to move around the court and then shoot to score a point. Learning to switch smoothly from dribbling to shooting is a key skill! Why does it matter? It helps you get away from defenders and find an open space to take the perfect shot. It makes you a more confident and effective player.

Example 1 — The Stationary Dribble to Shoot

This is a great way to practice the basic switch from dribbling to shooting.Find a spot a few steps from the basket.Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and bend your knees slightly.Dribble the ball with one hand 3-5 times, keeping your eyes looking towards the basket.Stop dribbling by catching the ball with both hands.Bring the ball up, aim, and shoot for the basket. Remember to follow through by snapping your wrist like you're reaching into a cookie jar on a high shelf!

Example 2 — The One-Dribble Drive and Shoot

This move helps you practice shooting while on the move.Start a little further away from the basket than before.Take one strong dribble forward, towards the basket. As you take your first step, pick up the ball with both hands. You can take up to two steps after you stop dribbling. This is called a 'layup'.On your second step, jump up towards the basket and gently lay the ball in or shoot it off the backboard.
