What & Why
Running, leaping, and landing are three separate skills. When you put them together in a smooth sequence, you can move over obstacles, jump for distance, and play all sorts of new games! Learning to do it correctly is important because it keeps you safe, helps you perform better, and builds your body's strength and coordination. It’s all about being powerful and safe at the same time.

Example 1 — The Puddle Jump
Imagine you're walking and see a big puddle you don't want to step in. Here's how to clear it!Approach: Take a few quick running steps toward the edge of the puddle to build up a little speed.Take-off: Push off powerfully from one foot, just before you reach the water. Swing your arms forward and up to help lift your body.Flight: While in the air, bring your knees up toward your chest. Look forward to where you want to land.Landing: Land on the other side on both feet at the same time. Bend your ankles and knees as you touch down to absorb the impact, like a spring.

Example 2 — The Creek Leap
You're on a hike and come to a small, narrow creek. You can leap right over it!Judge the Distance: Look at how far you need to jump. Give yourself enough room for a running start.Run with Purpose: Run smoothly towards the creek. Your last step before the leap should be your strongest push-off foot.Leap Long: Explode off your back foot, driving your other knee forward and up. Use your arms to propel you forward across the creek.Land Softly: Aim to land on the balls of your feet first, then let your heels come down as your knees bend deeply. This makes for a quiet, safe landing.
