What & Why

Have you ever heard the saying, "Practice makes perfect?" Well, a big part of practice is making mistakes! Think of your brain as a muscle. When you challenge it and make mistakes, it's like doing a workout. The mistake shows you exactly what you need to work on.When you believe you can get smarter by trying hard and learning from your errors, that's called a growth mindset. It's the idea that your brain isn't stuck — it can grow! Mistakes are the food that helps it grow.

Example 1 — Learning to Ride a Bike

Riding a bike for the first time can be wobbly and tricky. Let's see how mistakes help. The Mistake: You get on the bike, push off, and immediately fall over. Ouch! It's easy to feel like giving up.The Brain Food Moment: Instead of stopping, you think, "Why did I fall?" You realize you were looking down at your feet instead of straight ahead.Try Again: You get back on, but this time you focus on looking where you want to go. You still wobble, but you ride for five whole feet! The Growth: Each fall teaches you something new about balance and steering. The mistakes are literally teaching your brain and body how to ride the bike.

Example 2 — Solving a Math Puzzle

Math puzzles can be tough, and it's normal to not get the answer on the first try.The Mistake: You're working on a puzzle and your answer is 10, but the correct answer is 12. You got it wrong. The Brain Food Moment: Instead of just erasing it, you look closely at your work. You ask, "Where did I go wrong?" You see you added 2+2 and got 5 by accident.Try Again: You fix that one small step in your calculation. Now, your answer is 12!The Growth: By finding your own mistake, you've trained your brain to be more careful with addition and to double-check your work. Your math brain just got a little stronger.
