What & Why

Have you ever had a 'gut feeling' or 'butterflies' in your stomach? Those are your body's special signals! Our bodies are like feeling detectives, giving us clues about what's happening on the inside.Things like a fast heartbeat, a tight tummy, or sweaty palms are all ways our body talks to us. When we learn to listen, we can understand our feelings better and figure out what to do, whether we're feeling stressed, angry, or super happy. It's a superpower that helps us take care of our minds and moods!

Example 1 — The Test Jitters

It's time for the big math test. As soon as the papers are handed out, Leo feels his hands get a little sweaty and his heart starts beating like a drum.Notice the Clues: Leo notices his sweaty palms and fast heartbeat. He feels a little shaky.Connect to a Feeling: He thinks, 'My body feels this way when I'm nervous.' He names the feeling: anxiety.Take Action: Because he noticed the clues, Leo remembers a trick his teacher taught him. He takes three slow, deep 'belly breaths' before starting the test. This helps his body calm down so his brain can focus on the math problems.

Example 2 — The Playground Disagreement

Maya is playing tag when another student says something unkind about her drawing. Instantly, Maya feels her face get hot and her hands ball up into fists.Notice the Clues: Maya feels the heat in her face and the tightness in her hands. Her breathing gets faster.Connect to a Feeling: She recognizes these clues. 'This is what happens when I get angry,' she thinks.Take Action: Instead of yelling back, Maya decides to use her 'feeling detective' skills. She tells the other student, 'I need a minute,' and walks over to the water fountain. Taking a moment to cool down (literally!) helps her think clearly about what to do next.
