What & Why

Your mind is constantly talking. That inner voice is called self-talk, and it can be your biggest cheerleader or your harshest critic. Positive self-talk builds you up, while negative self-talk can hurt your confidence and mood.Gratitude is the simple practice of noticing and appreciating the good things in your life. It shifts your focus from what's wrong to what's right. Together, these tools help you build a healthier body image and a more resilient, positive view of yourself.

Example 1 — Flipping the Script on Negative Self-Talk

When you catch your inner critic being harsh, you can learn to challenge it. Here’s how to flip the script:Notice the Thought: First, just recognize the negative thought without judgment. For example: "I failed that quiz, I'm so stupid."Question It: Ask yourself: Is this thought 100% true? Is it helpful? Would I say this to my best friend? The answer is usually no.Reframe It: Replace the harsh thought with one that is more realistic, balanced, and kind. For example: "I'm disappointed with my grade, but it doesn't mean I'm stupid. I can ask the teacher for help on the topics I didn't understand."

Example 2 — Starting a Simple Gratitude Practice

You can train your brain to see the good by creating a simple gratitude habit. It only takes a few minutes.Choose a Time: Pick a consistent time, like right after you wake up or before you go to sleep.Find Your Method: Use a journal, a note on your phone, or just think in your head.List 3-5 Specific Things: Be specific! Instead of "my family," try "the way my brother made me laugh today." Instead of "my body," try "my strong legs that helped me run for the bus."Feel It: Take a moment to actually feel the appreciation for each item on your list. This helps make the positive feeling stick.
