The 'Tú' vs. 'Usted' Rule Use 'tú' with friends, family, and kids. Use 'usted' with teachers, principals, and adults you've just met. This is the most important rule for showing politeness. 'Tú' is for people close to you. 'Usted' shows respect to adults and strangers. The Greeting Rule 'Hola' is for informal situations.
