Grammar Rules & Patterns

Step 1: Find the Stem Infinitive - ir = Stem To start conjugating a regular -IR verb, you must first find its stem. You do this by simply removing the last two letters, -ir, from the infinitive form. Step 2: Add the Correct Ending Stem + New Ending = Conjugated Verb After you have the stem, add the correct present tense ending that matches the subject pronoun. The endings for -IR verbs are: -o, -es, -e, -imos, -en. The -IR Verb Endings Pattern yo: -o | tú: -es | él/ella/Ud.: -e | nosotros/as: -imos | ellos/ellas/Uds.: -en These are the specific endings you must memorize and add to the verb stem. Notice that the 'nosotros' ending, '-imos', is the only one that keeps the 'i' from the original '-ir' infinitive.
