What & Why

Overtraining, or 'burnout,' happens when you don't get enough rest to recover from all your hard work in sports and activities. Think of your body like a phone battery: training uses up the battery, and rest, sleep, and good food are how you recharge it. If you keep using it without recharging, it eventually stops working well. It's an imbalance: Too Much Training + Not Enough Recovery = Overtraining.Spotting the signs early is super important because it helps you avoid injury, stay healthy, and actually improve your performance. Remember, rest is part of your training!

Example 1 — The Physical Signs

Maya loves playing soccer and has been practicing every single day to get better. But lately, she's noticed some changes:Constant Fatigue: She feels exhausted when she wakes up, even after 8 hours of sleep.Nagging Soreness: Her leg muscles are sore all the time, not just the day after a tough practice.Getting Sick Often: She has caught two colds in one month, which is unusual for her. Her immune system is weak.Slower Performance: Her coach mentioned that her sprint times are getting slower, not faster. These are classic physical signs that Maya's body is not recovering and needs a break.

Example 2 — The Mental & Emotional Signs

Leo is a competitive swimmer who usually can't wait to get to the pool. Recently, though, things feel different:Irritability: He gets annoyed easily with his family and friends over small things.Loss of Motivation: He has started to dread going to practice and has even thought about quitting the team.Trouble Concentrating: He finds it hard to focus on his homework after school because he feels mentally drained.Feeling Down: He just feels kind of sad or 'blah' and isn't enjoying things as much. These are major mental and emotional signs of burnout. Overtraining doesn't just affect the body; it affects the mind, too.
