What & Why

In invasion games (like soccer, basketball, or hockey), defending means protecting your team's goal and space. Your job is to make it difficult for the other team to move the ball or puck toward your goal and score. Why is it so important? Good defense isn't just about one person; it's about teamwork! When everyone helps defend, you can stop the other team, get the ball back, and have your own chance to score. It's a fun challenge that makes you a more complete player!

Example 1 — Shadowing an Opponent

One of the most important jobs in defense is to guard, or 'shadow,' a player on the other team. Here’s how you do it:Step 1: Get Goal-Side. Always stay between the player you are guarding and your team's goal. If they get past you, they have a clear path to score!Step 2: Give Some Space. Stand about one arm's length away. If you're too close, they can run around you easily. If you're too far, they can get a pass or take a shot.Step 3: Watch Their Body, Not Just the Ball. Look at their hips and feet to see which way they might go.Step 4: Move Your Feet! Use quick, small side-steps to stay in front of them. Don't cross your feet, or you might get tangled up.

Example 2 — Creating a 'Wall'

You can't defend all by yourself! Working with teammates is key. Sometimes you need to form a 'wall' to block space.Step 1: Find the Danger Zone. The most dangerous area is right in front of your goal. This is where you and your teammates should focus.Step 2: Communicate. Talk to your teammates! Use simple words like, 'I've got this player!' or 'Help in the middle!' This prevents two defenders from guarding one player while another is left wide open.Step 3: Fill the Gaps. Stand side-by-side with your teammates to take away the open lanes the other team wants to run through. Imagine you are building a brick wall with no holes.
