What & Why
In many games, your job on defense is to guard one other player. 'Being a shadow' means you stick to that player like their own shadow follows them around! Why do we do this? To make it hard for them to get the ball, pass to a teammate, or score a goal. It's one of the most important jobs on a team!

Example 1 — Shadow Tag
This is a fun warm-up game to practice the skill!Find a partner. One person is the 'Player,' and the other is the 'Shadow.'The Player can move anywhere inside a small, safe area (like a square made with cones). They can jog, skip, or change directions. The Shadow's job is to stay as close as possible to the Player without touching them. Try to be their reflection! After 30 seconds, switch roles.Pro Tip: Try watching the Player's tummy or hips. It's harder for them to trick you if you don't watch their head or feet!

Example 2 — Soccer Defense
Imagine an opponent is dribbling a soccer ball right toward your goal!Don't run straight at them. Your first job is to get between them and your team's goal.Bend your knees and get into a low, balanced stance. This is your 'ready position.'Shuffle your feet side-to-side to stay in front of them. Try not to cross your feet!Watch their hips to see which way they're going to turn.Your goal isn't to steal the ball right away, but to slow them down and block their path to the goal.
