What & Why

Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. In sports, it's about playing fair, following the rules, and being truthful, even when no one is watching. It’s the foundation of true sportsmanship. Why does it matter? Integrity builds trust with your teammates and coaches, earns respect from your opponents, and protects the fairness of the game. More importantly, the character you build through integrity in sports is the same character you'll carry with you in school, work, and life.

Example 1 — The Unseen Touch

Imagine you're in a close volleyball match. The ball is hit towards the sideline. The Situation: You dive for the ball and just barely touch it with your fingertip before it goes out of bounds. The referee doesn't see the touch and calls the point for your team. The Temptation: Your team is down by one point, and this point could win you the game. It's easy to stay quiet and take the point. The Integrity Move: You know you touched it. You make eye contact with the ref, tap your finger, and signal the touch. The point is awarded to the other team. The Outcome: You might lose the game, but you've gained something more valuable: self-respect and the respect of everyone who witnessed your honesty. You upheld the fairness of the competition.

Example 2 — The Locker Room Gossip

Your team just had a tough practice, and one player made several mistakes. Later, you're in the locker room and hear a few teammates blaming that player and making unkind jokes. The Situation: The targeted teammate isn't there, but the conversation is negative and tearing down team unity. The Temptation: It's easiest to just laugh along, say nothing, or walk away to avoid conflict. The Integrity Move: You step in calmly and say something constructive, like, "Hey, let's not pile on. We're a team, and we all have off days. Let's focus on how we can all support each other and get better for the next game."The Outcome: You might stop the negative talk and remind your teammates about respect and unity. You're building a stronger, more supportive team culture by protecting a teammate's dignity.
