Estar for Location Use the verb 'estar' (estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis, están) to indicate the physical location of people, places, and things. While 'ser' describes inherent characteristics, 'estar' is always used for location, whether temporary or permanent. For example, a bank is permanently on a street, but we still use 'estar' to say where it is. Prepositions of Location Combine prepositions with 'de' to describe relative positions: 'al lado de' (next to), 'enfrente de' (in front of/across from), 'cerca de' (near), 'lejos de' (far from), 'detrás de' (behind).
