Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample El PretéritoThe preterite tense in Spanish is used to describe actions that were completed in the past at a specific point in time. It focuses on the beginning or end of an action, or a series of completed actions.Ayer *viajé* a Madrid. (Yesterday I traveled to Madrid.) Verbos Regulares del PretéritoThese are verbs that follow a predictable pattern of endings when conjugated in the preterite tense, depending on whether they end in -AR, -ER, or -IR.Yo *hablé* (I spoke), Tú *comiste* (You ate), Él *vivió* (He lived). Grammar Rules & Patterns

Regular Preterite Conjugation -AR verbs: -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron. -ER/-IR verbs: -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron. Remember that -AR and -ER verbs have identical 'nosotros' forms in the present and preterite, so context is key. -IR verbs have a stem change in the third person singular/plural if they are stem-changing in the present tense (e.g., dormir -> durmió). Irregular Preterite Verbs: Ser & Ir Both 'ser' (to be) and 'ir' (to go) have the exact same irregular preterite conjugations: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron. The meaning is determined by context. If you are talking about where someone went, it's 'ir'. If you a...
