Identifying Verbs in the Past (Pretérito)
Look for verbs ending in -ó, -é, -aron, -ieron.
When reading chronicles, these endings tell you the action already happened. 'El hombre caminó' means the man walked and finished walking. This helps you understand the sequence of events.
Finding the Direct Object Pronoun's Partner
Ask 'What?' or 'Whom?' after the verb. The pronoun (lo, la, los, las) replaces the answer.
To understand what 'lo' or 'la' means, look at the sentence before it. If it says, 'Vio la flor,' the next sentence might say, 'La recogió.' 'La' refers back to 'la flor'.
