Grammar Rules & Patterns

The 'Voy a...' Formula Voy a + [the place] To say where you are going, you always start with the phrase 'Voy a' and then add the name of the place you are going to. Using Articles 'el' and 'la' Voy a + la + [feminine place] OR Voy a + el + [masculine place] Every place in Spanish is either masculine or feminine. You must use 'la' before feminine places (like 'la escuela') and 'el' before masculine places (like 'el parque'). The Special Contraction 'al' a + el = al When the little word 'a' comes right before the word 'el', they get squished together to make one word: 'al'. You never say 'a el' in Spanish.
