The 'Es la una' Rule If the hour is 1, always use 'Es la una'. For all other hours (2-12), always use 'Son las...' This is the most important rule for telling time. 'Una' (one) is a singular number, so we use the singular verb 'es'. All other hours are plural, so we use the plural verb 'son'. The 'Y' Formula (For Past the Hour) Son las [hour] y [minutes].
