  • Apply the correct preterite conjugations of at least 6 out of 8 common irregular verbs (*ser, ir, dar, ver, hacer, estar, tener, poder*) to complete sentences in a paragraph describing a past event with 80% accuracy.
  • Explain the stem changes (if any) and/or unique conjugations that occur in the preterite tense for at least 4 out of 5 presented irregular verbs, providing a logical justification for each change.
  • Create 5 original sentences in the preterite tense, each using a different irregular verb from the lesson (e.g., *ser, ir, dar, ver, hacer, estar, tener, poder*), demonstrating correct conjugation and context.

Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify the major groups of irregular preterite verbs (I-U-J stems, ser/ir, dar/ver). Recall the unique stems for common I-U-J group verbs (e.g., tener -> tuv, decir -> dij). Apply the special set of endings for I-U-J stem-changing verbs. Conjugate the 'super irregulars' ser, ir, dar, and ver accurately in all forms. Differentiate between the J-group ending (-eron) and the I/U-group ending (-ieron) for the ellos/ellas/ustedes form. Construct sentences using irregular preterite verbs to describe completed past actions. Distinguish the use of ser vs. ir in the preterite based on sentence context. What did you do last weekend? Did you go to the movies, see friends, or do homework? 🤔 To talk about it, you need the masters of the past tense...

Add the special irregular endings: -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron/-eron. This is the largest group of irregulars. The key is to memorize the new stem and this single set of endings, which have NO accent marks. Note that for 'hacer', the él/ella/Ud. form is 'hizo' to maintain the 's' sound. For J-stems, the ellos/ellas/Uds. ending is '-eron' (e.g., dijeron). The 'Super Irregulars': Ser/Ir and Dar/Ver Ser & Ir: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron. Dar: di, diste, dio, dimos, disteis, dieron. Ver: vi, viste, vio, vimos, visteis, vieron. These verbs are complet...
