Setting the Scene vs. The Main Action
Use the Imperfect for background details and the Preterite for the specific, completed actions that move the story forward.
Think of the imperfect as the scenery and setting of a play (e.g., Era un día soleado, La gente paseaba). The preterite is what the main characters *did* on stage (e.g., El héroe llegó, La villana gritó).
The Interruption Formula
Imperfect (ongoing action) + cuando + Preterite (interrupting action).
This common pattern shows one action in progress being interrupted by another. The ongoing action is always in the imperfect, and the action that interrupts it is always in the preterite.
