The Hook
You have a big pile of homework, but your friend asks you to play a game. You really want to say no, but you are worried they will be mad. What do you do? It feels tricky, but learning to say no is a superpower that puts you in charge of your own time.

The Real Talk
Every time you say "yes" to one thing, you are saying "no" to something else. If you say yes to playing a game when you have homework, you are saying no to being prepared for school. It is not mean to say no. It is honest.Always saying yes to make others happy is called people-pleasing. It might seem nice, but it can make you feel tired, stressed, and even a little grumpy. You end up doing what everyone else wants, instead of what you need to do.Saying no is a skill you can learn, just like kicking a ball. It feels weird at first, but it gets easier with practice. Here’s why it matters:It shows you respect your own time and feelings. It is more honest than saying yes when you mean no.It gives you more time for the things you truly want to do.

The Story
Kenji (10) loved playing with his friends, and he always said yes when they asked. But lately, he felt tired and was always rushing his homework. One afternoon, his friend Marcus asked him to play soccer, but Kenji just wanted to rest. He remembered what his grandmother told him: "Taking care of yourself is important, too."
Taking a deep breath, Kenji said, "No thanks, Marcus. I'm too tired today." He waited, expecting Marcus to be upset. Instead, Marcus just said, "Okay! Maybe tomorrow then?" and ran off to find someone else. Kenji went inside and felt a huge sense of relief. He realized saying no was not nearly as scary as he had imagined.
