The Period Rule
Always end a street name abbreviation with a period (.).
When you shorten a word like 'Street' to 'St.', you must put a period at the end. This little dot tells the reader that it's an abbreviation.
The Capitalization Rule
Always start a street name abbreviation with a capital letter.
Just like the full word, the abbreviation for a street name is part of a proper noun and needs a capital letter. For example, 'avenue' becomes 'Ave.'.
