Key Rules & Conventions

The Capitalization Rule Always begin the abbreviation for a month with a capital letter. Because the months of the year are proper nouns, their shortened forms must also be treated as proper nouns. It signals that it is an abbreviation. The Short Month Exception Months with four or fewer letters are usually not abbreviated. The months May, June, and July are already very short. Abbreviating them doesn't save much space, so we just write out the full name.
