Key Rules & Conventions

The Three-Letter Rule Abbreviate the day of the week using its first three letters. This is the most common and standard way to shorten the days. For example, 'Monday' becomes 'Mon' and 'Friday' becomes 'Fri'. The Capitalization Rule Always start the abbreviation for a day of the week with a capital letter. Because the full names of the days are proper nouns, their abbreviations must also be capitalized. You must write 'Wed.' not 'wed.'. The Punctuation Rule Always place a period at the end of the day-of-the-week abbreviation. The period is a signal that the word has been cut short. For example, 'Sunday' is abbreviated as 'Sun.' with a period at the end.
