Key Rules & Conventions
No Period, No Problem
Metric abbreviations do not end with a period (unless it is the last word in a sentence).
Unlike abbreviations like 'Dr.' or 'St.', metric abbreviations like 'cm' or 'kg' should not have a period after them. For example, write '10 kg' not '10 kg.'.
One or Many, It's All the Same
The abbreviation stays the same for both singular and plural amounts.
You never add an 's' to a metric abbreviation. You would write '1 m' for one meter and '50 m' for fifty meters, not '50 ms'.
Case Matters: Big L, Little Letters
Most metric abbreviations are lowercase, but Liter is a capital 'L'.
