The No '-ed' Rule Irregular verbs do not add '-ed' to show the past tense. When you have an irregular verb, you have to remember its special past tense form instead of just adding '-ed'. For example, 'run' becomes 'ran', not 'runned'. The Vowel Change Pattern Some irregular verbs change their middle vowel to form the past tense. Pay attention to the vowel in the middle of the word.
