Key Rules & Conventions
The No '-ed' Rule
Irregular verbs do not add '-ed' to show the past tense.
When you want to talk about something that already happened using an irregular verb, you must change the word to its special past tense form. You cannot just add '-ed' like you do for regular verbs.
Memorization is Key
Each irregular verb has a unique past tense form that must be memorized.
Think of these verbs like sight words. We need to practice and remember the special past tense form for each one. For example, we remember that the past of 'go' is 'went' and the past of 'eat' is 'ate'.
