Key Rules & Conventions

The Action Word First Rule A command usually starts with an action word (a verb). Look at the very first word of the sentence. If it's an action word like 'run', 'jump', or 'draw', it might be a command! The Bossy Sentence Rule A command tells someone what to do. Ask yourself, 'Is this sentence telling me or someone to do something?' If the answer is yes, it's a command. The End Mark Rule A command ends with a period (.) or an exclamation mark (!). Check the end of the sentence. Commands use these two end marks to show the thought is finished.
