Example 1 — Basketball Defense

You are guarding a player who has the ball. How do you read and react?1. Read the Clues:Their Eyes: Where are they looking? They often look where they want to pass.Their Body: Are they squared up to the basket to shoot? Are they crouched low like they're about to dribble past you?Your Teammates: Is one of your teammates out of position, leaving another opponent open?2. React Quickly:If they look left, anticipate a pass to that side and get your hands ready to intercept. If they lower their shoulder and start dribbling hard, move your feet to stay in front of them and block their path.If they pick up their dribble, apply pressure because they can't move anymore!

Example 2 — Soccer Offense

You have the ball and are moving toward the opponent's goal. Defenders are closing in. How do you read and react?1. Read the Clues:The Defenders: How many are there? Are they running directly at you or trying to cut off your path to the goal?Your Teammates: Is a teammate running into an open space where you could pass them the ball? The Goalie: Is the goalie out of position, leaving one side of the net open?2. React Quickly:If a defender commits to stopping you, pass the ball into the space they just left for your teammate. If you see a clear lane to the goal, accelerate and take the shot.If your teammates are all covered, shield the ball with your body to protect it until an option opens up.
