What & Why

In many sports, you can't win alone. Cooperative passing and moving is all about teamwork. It means you and a partner (or teammate) work together to move the ball down the field, court, or ice by passing to each other and immediately moving into a new, open space. Why is this so important? It helps your team:Keep the ball away from opponents.Confuse the defense.Create open lanes for scoring.Move the ball faster than any single player can run with it.

Example 1 — The Give-and-Go

The Give-and-Go is a classic 1-2 play that helps you get around a defender. Think of it as a quick 'give' the ball, and 'go' to a new spot to get it back.Step 1: Player A has the ball and is being guarded by a defender.Step 2: Player A makes a short, accurate pass to a nearby teammate, Player B.Step 3: Immediately after passing, Player A sprints into an open space, usually behind the defender.Step 4: Player B quickly passes the ball back to Player A in the new open space. The defender has been left behind!

Example 2 — The Wall Pass

A Wall Pass is similar to a Give-and-Go, but it's even quicker. You use your teammate like a practice wall to bounce the ball off of.Step 1: Player A is running with the ball and a defender is directly in their path.Step 2: Player B is positioned to the side, ready to help.Step 3: Player A makes a firm, one-touch pass to Player B.Step 4: Player A doesn't stop, but continues running past the defender.Step 5: Player B doesn't trap the ball, but immediately directs it back into Player A's path with one touch. It's like the ball just bounced off a wall!
