What & Why
Anticipation is the skill of predicting what an opponent is going to do next. It’s not about reading minds! It’s about observing clues—like body language, positioning, and patterns—to make an educated guess. Why does it matter? When you can anticipate a move, you give yourself more time to react. You can get into a better defensive position, intercept a pass, or create a scoring opportunity for your own team. It turns you from a reactive player into a proactive one.

Example 1 — Basketball
You are on defense, guarding a player with the ball.Observe Cues: Where are their eyes looking? Are they looking at a teammate across the court, or are they staring at the hoop? How are their feet positioned?Predict the Move: If their eyes are locked on a teammate, they are very likely to pass. If their feet and shoulders are squared up to the basket, they are probably getting ready to shoot.React & Protect: If you predict a pass, you can move into the passing lane to try and steal the ball. If you predict a shot, you can raise your hands to block it or get ready to grab the rebound.

Example 2 — Soccer
An opponent is dribbling the ball towards you.Observe Cues: Watch their hips and shoulders. Most players will dip their shoulder or turn their hips in the direction they plan to go. Are they looking up (aware of the field) or down at the ball (less aware)?Predict the Move: If they lean to their right, they are likely planning to dribble to your left. If they are looking up, they might be looking for a teammate to pass to.React & Protect: Instead of lunging for the ball, position your body to block their most likely path. By taking away their first choice, you force them to make a slower, less effective move.
