What & Why

'Reading the game' is like being a detective on the field or court. It means you're not just watching the ball; you're observing everything—where players are, how they're moving, and even where they're looking. Why does it matter? When you can predict what's about to happen, you can get into the right position faster, make smarter decisions, and help your team gain a huge advantage!

Example 1 — Soccer

You are a defender. An opponent is dribbling towards you, but you see them take a quick glance to their left, where their teammate is starting to run past your defensive line. The Clue: The quick glance. Players almost always look where they are going to pass. The Prediction: They are about to attempt a 'through pass' to their running teammate.Your Move: Instead of charging at the player with the ball, you can take a step back and to the left to cut off the passing lane and intercept the ball.

Example 2 — Basketball

You are guarding a player who has the ball. You see one of their teammates run up close behind your fellow defender and stop, planting their feet firmly. The Clue: The teammate planting their feet is setting a 'screen' or a 'pick'.The Prediction: The player you are guarding is going to dribble closely around their teammate to try and block you.Your Move: Shout 'Screen left!' to your teammate so they are aware. You can then decide to quickly switch who you are guarding or fight over the screen to stay with your player.
