What & Why
The Four Phases of a JumpEvery jump, whether it's for a basketball rebound or just for fun, has four parts:Preparation: This is your 'ready' position. You bend your knees and hips, loading your muscles like a spring.Launch: This is the explosion! You push off the ground powerfully, extending your legs and swinging your arms to propel yourself into the air.Flight: You're airborne! In this phase, you control your body to position yourself for your goal, like reaching for a ball or preparing to land.Landing: This is the most important phase for safety. You absorb the impact by landing softly, bending your knees and hips again. Why It MattersProper technique isn't just about performance; it's about protecting your joints, especially your ankles and knees. Example 1 — The Box Jump
A box jump is a great exercise for building explosive power. Here's how to do it safely:Set Up: Stand facing a sturdy, low box (about knee height or lower to start). Your feet should be shoulder-width apart.Prepare: Bend your knees and hips into a mini-squat. Swing your arms back behind you.Launch: Explode upwards by pushing hard through your feet. Swing your arms forward and up at the same time to help lift you.Land: Aim to land on the center of the box with both feet at the same time. Land softly, like a cat, immediately bending your knees to absorb the shock. Your landing position should look like your starting position.Get Down: Step down from the box one foot at a time. Never jump down backwards.

Example 2 — The Long Jump
In track and field, the long jump is all about maximizing horizontal distance. Technique is everything.Approach: Start with a controlled run to build up speed.Takeoff: As you reach the takeoff board, plant one foot firmly and drive your other knee and your arms up and forward. You're converting your running speed into upward and forward flight.Flight: While in the air, bring both legs forward in a 'seated' position. This helps you stay in the air longer and prepares you for landing.Landing: Extend your feet as far forward as you can. When your heels hit the sand, immediately bend your knees and allow your body to fall forward or to the side. Falling backward will shorten your measured jump!
