What & Why

A setback is any time things don't go as planned. It could be missing a goal in soccer, getting a lower grade than you hoped for, or having a misunderstanding with a friend. It can feel disappointing or frustrating.Learning to bounce back, or be resilient, isn't about never failing. It's about how you respond when you do. It's the process of turning a negative experience into a positive lesson that makes you more confident and capable for the next challenge.

Example 1 — The Missed Shot

Imagine you're playing basketball and you miss the final, game-winning shot. The buzzer sounds and your team loses. You feel awful.Feel the Feeling: It's okay to be disappointed. Take a moment to acknowledge that feeling instead of ignoring it.Find the Lesson (Reframe): Instead of thinking, "I'm a terrible player," try thinking, "That was a high-pressure shot. What can I do to feel more prepared next time?"Make a Plan: Your plan could be simple: "I'm going to practice 15 pressure shots at the end of every practice this week."Take Action: The next day at practice, you stay a few minutes late and work on exactly that shot. You're turning the setback into fuel.

Example 2 — The Tough Test

You studied for your science test, but you get it back and the grade is much lower than you expected. You feel your stomach drop.Feel the Feeling: It's normal to feel sad or embarrassed. Let yourself feel it for a bit.Find the Lesson (Reframe): Instead of thinking, "I'm just bad at science," ask, "Which specific topics on the test were the most confusing for me?"Make a Plan: Decide to look over the test, circle the 3 questions you struggled with most, and plan to ask the teacher for help with them tomorrow.Take Action: You approach your teacher, show them the questions, and get a clearer explanation. You're taking control of your learning.
