What & Why

Being a great winner means being happy about your victory without making the other person or team feel bad. It's also called showing good sportsmanship.Why does it matter? When you're a good winner, people will respect you, enjoy playing with you, and want to be your friend, whether you win or lose next time!

Example 1 — The Respectful Finish

You just won a close game of kickball. The other team is walking off the field, looking disappointed.Walk, don't run, over to the other team.Find a player, look them in the eye, and offer your hand for a handshake or a high-five.Say something simple and sincere, like "Good game!" or "That was a really fun game."Avoid saying things like "We crushed you!" or "You guys were easy to beat."

Example 2 — The Team Celebration

Your relay race team just crossed the finish line first! Everyone is excited and cheering.First, turn to your own teammates. Give them high-fives and say, "Great job, team!" or "We did it!"Enjoy the moment together, but keep your celebration focused on your team's success.Don't point or laugh at the other teams. They tried their best, too.After celebrating with your team, you can go tell the other runners "Good race."
