Our bodies need two very important things to work well: water and smart snacks!Water is the best drink for us. It helps our brains think, keeps our bodies cool, and gives us energy to run and play. When we don't drink enough, we can feel tired and grumpy.Smart snacks are foods that give us long-lasting energy. Think of them as 'Go Foods'! They are usually from the main food groups, like fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins. Sugary treats are 'Whoa Foods' — okay sometimes, but they don't give us the best fuel.

Example 1 — Thirsty After Playtime

You just finished running all over the playground for recess. You feel hot and your mouth feels a little dry. That's your body telling you it needs water!Listen to your body. Feeling thirsty means it's time to drink.Find your water bottle or go to the water fountain.Take sips of water. Drink until you feel refreshed and not thirsty anymore.Great job! Now your body is hydrated and ready to learn again.

It's snack time at home! Your grown-up says you can choose between a cookie or a banana.Think about fuel. Which snack is a 'Go Food' that will give you energy for a long time?Remember the food groups. A banana is a fruit! It's full of good stuff for your body. A cookie is a 'Whoa Food' with lots of sugar.Make a smart choice. You choose the banana. It's sweet, yummy, and gives you the power to play!Choosing smart snacks helps your body stay strong and healthy.
