Grammar Rules & Patterns
The 'Tú' vs. 'Usted' Foundation
Informal greetings are always used in the 'tú' context.
When you talk to friends, people your age, or close family, you use the 'tú' form. This means questions like 'How are you?' become '¿Cómo estás?' (tú) instead of '¿Cómo está?' (usted). All the greetings in this lesson are for 'tú' situations.
The Greeting + Check-in Pattern
Greeting + ¿Cómo estás? / ¿Qué tal? / ¿Cómo andas?
It's very common to combine a greeting with a question asking how the person is doing. For example, instead of just 'Hola', you would say 'Hola, ¿qué tal?' to make it a more complete and friendly greeting.
The Informal Response Pattern
Short Answer + ¿Y tú?...
