Grammar Rules & Patterns
Using the Imperfect for Descriptions (D.W.A.T.E.R.)
Use the imperfect tense to talk about Descriptions, Weather, Age, Time, Emotions, and Repeated/habitual actions in the past.
When you want to set the scene or describe how things were, the imperfect is your tool. It's not for single, completed actions. Think of it as the 'background information' of your story.
Conjugation Pattern: Regular Verbs
1. Take the verb infinitive (e.g., hablar). 2. Drop the ending (-ar, -er, -ir). 3. Add the correct imperfect ending based on the subject pronoun and the original verb type.
For -AR verbs, add '-aba, -abas, -aba, -ábamos, -aban'. For -ER and -IR verbs, add '-ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -ían'. Remember the accent on the 'i' for all -ER/-IR forms!...
