Grammar Rules & Patterns
The 'Dieci-' Pattern (Numbers 16-19)
diez + y + [number 6-9] = diecinúmero
For numbers 16, 17, 18, and 19, you combine 'diez y' (ten and) with the second digit to form one single word. The 'z' in 'diez' changes to a 'c' and the 'y' changes to an 'i'. For example, 'diez y seis' becomes 'dieciséis'.
The 'Veinti-' Pattern (Numbers 21-29)
veinte + y + [number 1-9] = veintinúmero
For numbers 21 through 29, you combine 'veinte y' (twenty and) with the second digit to form one single word. The 'e' at the end of 'veinte' is dropped and replaced with an 'i'. For example, 'veinte y cuatro' becomes 'veinticuatro'.
